MX5 to Compete at Nurbergring

To commemorate the model’s 25th anniversary, Mazda has announced that it will partner with the UK’s JOTA Sport Company to enter a Mazda MX5 in the 24 Hours Nürburgring Endurance Race taking place in Germany on June 21 and 22, 2014.

JOTA Sport will prepare the vehicle and manage the race team, consisting of four drivers including Stefan Johansson, who knows endurance racing inside out and has an outstanding track record as a driver for Mazdaspeed at 24 Hours of Le Mans; Wolfgang Kaufmann, who has an intimate knowledge of the Nürburgring circuit; Owen Mildenhall, a journalist who has raced the Mazda MX5 in a variety of competitions throughout England; and Teruaki Kato, winner of Japan’s Roadster Party Race.

The iconic MX5 symbolises Mazda’s car-making philosophy and tireless pursuit of driving pleasure. This lightweight sports car will now make the most of its outstanding Jinba-Ittai (“rider and horse as one”) dynamic performance to take on the challenge of competing in one of amateur racing’s most prominent competitions, the 24 Hours Nürburgring.

Mazda is sponsoring driving schools and participatory motorsport events, in the hope that more and more customers will be able to enjoy sporty driving. Through such activities Mazda aims to enrich the lives of its customers, and help to build a special bond between them and the Mazda brand.

The world’s best-selling two-seater sports car, the Mazda MX5, was presented with the prestigious ‘Convertible Award’ at the 2014 awards, held in London on 15 May 2014.

The awards are allocated to those vehicles that attract the greatest numbers of page-views on the website. The hugely popular MX5, which won ‘Most Popular Roadster’ in the awards last year, has continued to prove its lasting appeal to visitors on the site over the last 12 months, delivering sports car performance at a reasonable price.

“The MX5 has long been regarded as the most enjoyable and engaging open-top car, building up a huge following over the years,” explains Dan Harrison, Editor of “So it’s perhaps no surprise to see it coming out as the most popular convertible again. Its combination of buzzy performance and superb handling, combined with an affordable price tag has clearly found favour among our users.”

Jeremy Thomson, Managing Director at Mazda Motors UK, commented: “The Mazda MX5 is the epitome of our ethos, ‘Challenge Convention To Make Things Better’. Launched globally 25 years ago, each generation of the roadster has won Mazda more fans, sales and awards and it is testament to its outstanding balance, agility and timeless styling that it continues to thrive in the UK.”
