Top Gun for Francophiles!

If Tom Cruise had been French, and if he had flown a Dassault Mirage 2000 instead of a Grumman F-14 Tomcat, then he could well have starred in “Les Chevaliers du Ciel“, a 2005 action movie that has been called “Top Gun à la Française.”

The film was made in co-operation with the French Air Force and initially the standard safety rules applied, but eventually the minimum allowed altitude was reduced to 3 m (10 ft) and the minimum distance between aircraft was reduced to 1 m (3 ft) which made for some very exciting flying sequences!

Supersonic at low level

Much of Les Chevaliers du Ciel was shot using air-to-air cameras and the photography is superb; but don’t take our word for it. Bump this video up to full-screen, and see for yourself. Magnifique!

The Need for Speed

It is twenty five years since the release of my favourite film of all time, “Top Gun” and a new digital edition has been  released in the USA to mark the anniversary. The most surprising thing to me is that, in spite of having spent 25 years as an air traffic controller on fast jet bases, I like the film so much! I think it is because the story is very close to the truth, the pilots really are (quite) like that and  fighter stations have a special atmosphere of excitement… I just loved it!
